Annual Physical Exams Q & A

What is an annual exam?

The purpose of an annual exam is to evaluate your current health and screen for any developing problems. Annual exams can catch minor issues before they become serious, allowing you to enjoy a longer, healthier life.

What types of annual exams are available?

Reyes and Reyes, MD, PA, offers basic annual exams, school physicals, and work physicals. Basic annual exams are designed to monitor a patient’s health and look for any issues that may require further testing or treatment. School and work physicals are designed to look for problems that may make it unsafe for a patient to engage in any required activities at school or work.

What happens during an annual exam?

At the beginning of an annual exam, a member of the staff at Reyes and Reyes, MD, PA, will typically take your vitals, including heart rate, temperature, and blood pressure. Your weight will also be measured at this time. Next, Dr. Reyes will perform a thorough examination. He may listen to your lungs and heart, check your reflexes, and ask questions about your symptoms or general health.

In some cases, Dr. Reyes may order blood work as part of an annual exam. The purpose of blood work is to screen for common health problems, such as high cholesterol. In addition, Dr. Reyes may offer vaccinations to a patient at an annual exam.

What happens if Dr. Reyes finds a problem?

If Dr. Reyes notices something troublesome during an annual exam, he’ll typically order further tests or refer you to a specialist. If you’re completing a school or work physical, Dr. Reyes may not release you for school or work until he has investigated the issue.

When should I schedule an annual exam?

If you need a physical for school or work before a certain date, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. That’ll ensure you have the physical completed before the deadline. Patients age 16 or older should see Dr. Reyes annually for a complete exam, regardless of whether they need a physical for school or work.
